Eating from the tree of knowledge was supposed to be death. But I believe Adam and Eve would have died anyway; only, the concept of death would not have existed in their minds. They would have died not knowing it was coming, and maybe that ignorance would have protected them a while longer.

Obeying without question is not life. Eternal existence is absent of life. Life is knowledge. Knowledge is freedom. Freedom is death. Once I am free, I cannot go back. I can only go on.
