FYI, the main section of the National Park is open 24hrs. There are people living inside the park, so you can enter and exit at any time. The closures at 5pm are in the winter of the north and south sections, where there are no resorts inside. In the main section there are lodges and restaurants and other places to take your money. I asked at an information center about sleeping in the car. I was told it is illegal and I would get fined if somebody found me at night. I left at 6pm and slept at a Walmart near Luray Caverns, about 40 minute drive away.
